I am glad to see that you are back, Wilgeens.

President Preval said recently at the United Nations in New York that foreign aid has never helped any nation get out of the cycle of poverty.

He is right.Yet, he is quick to accept a million and a half here from Digicel and some millions there from other people.

The problem is that aid in itself is not bad if it is for a temporary problem like the recent catastrophe that hit the country.Aid becomes toxic when it creates a condition of dependence.

I helped some people in Haiti from time to time. No matter how much money you send them, they always need more. They get to a point when they start demanding things from you. That's when you know that they have become parasites.

As a country, we can provide for ourselves.

We can organize ourselves so that we don't depend on foreign aid which is sometimes a lot of promises and nothing concrete.

We have however to get rid of the dependence mentality.

If a catastrophe hits, let us pull together our own resources to face it.If foreign aid comes fine, but let us not go begging for it like a little dog everytime we have a problem.

That's the only way for us to get out of our deep poverty:real independence.
