Governor General Michaelle Jean described traumatic, blood-soaked memories from her childhood as she told a Haitian audience how their country has, in some ways, changed for the better.

Michaelle Jean's father was tortured by the security forces of the Duvalier regime, forcing the family to flee as refugees and leaving him emotionally damaged.
