How to Donate to Haiti- Many Stars are Donating

< Previous | Home | Next >

Star power, new technologies, and old-fashioned government aid are all playing a part in the extraordinary effort to help the people of Haiti.

Concerned individuals from around the globe have already donated millions of dollars to the earthquake ravaged country.

And they are continuing to respond to requests for aid...

International individual financial donations are totaling in the millions.

Many are choosing to donate via text message: Texting the word "Haiti" to 90999 sends a $10 donation to the Red Cross.

Those $10 donations are adding up. As of Friday morning, more than $8 million dollars had been contributed to the Red Cross via text-messaging alone.

Reuters reports that the U.S. texting donations have made for "an unprecedented mobile response to a natural disaster." Of course, you can also donate via the Web.

The Red Cross isn't the only organization to receive generous contributions.

Yele Haiti, a grassroots organization started by rapper and Haiti native Wyclef Jean, is also accepting donations via text message.

Texting "Yele" to 501501 makes a $5 contribution.

Wyclef has also traveled to Haiti, where he is personally helping with rescue efforts.

Of course, not everyone can travel to Haiti to help in person, but many celebrities are using their considerable power to raise money and awareness.

Academy Award winner George Clooney is working with MTV to host a telethon that raises money for earthquake relief.

The details are still being ironed out, but according to an article from the AP, the proposed telethon "would likely air Jan. 22 on all MTV Networks, which include VH1, Comedy Central, and CMT -- as well as on ABC, NBC, HBO, and CNN."

Other Hollywood stars making contributions to the effort include Madonna, who donated $250,000, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have given $1 million to Doctors Without Borders.

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen donated $1.5 million.

Former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are also doing what they can to raise money.

Though on opposite sides of the political spectrum, the unlikely duo was tapped by President Obama to "raise as much money as possible and put it into the most constructive channels possible." On NBC's "The Today Show," Clinton called these first days following the quake "critical," as the need for supplies and money are of the utmost importance.

There are many ways you can help the relief efforts in Haiti.

Below, just a few established charities that are working around the clock to help those in need.

•Red Cross
•UNICEF
