Starting a business anywhere is a hard thing to do. Starting a business in a foreign land is almost an impossible task. You did not mention the nature of your business and at what stage that you are. For one thing, you have to be present.

Absentee owners is a guarantee failure.

If you are doing utilitarian business (something that everybody needed on a daily basis, like food, water, etc) and your competitions can't do any better than you. That's good!! Customs ...may be a constant hassle, unless you know somebody from inside...

If your business is a service, I.e. teaching a foreign language, dance, cultural exchange ideas, etc...will make your business somewhat easier because you control the inventory, clients, and money.

One thing though you will never be in control of is a coup d'etat wherever you will go in the third world.

Haiti is MORE apt to one albeit than any place else. within the Caribbean region.

The Haitians that I know are fairly honest ONCE they know you and adopt you as a family member.

The key word is to go slowly.

Know your employees as individuals, make your workplace user friendly and offer a relatively descent salary.

The good ones will be with your for over and the bad ones will disappear because the good ones will chase the bad ones away.
If you do not know the language, I suggest that you start learning it. learn Haitian Creole before you learn French.

Haitian Creole will be more useful to you for communication with your employees and people in your immediate environment.

Wishing you good luck,
Bernadette
