xek9soldier Last time I checked Haiti was not part of the United States and it's full of voodoo and pagans.

Why should the US be responsible?

China is wealthy why don't they take care of these crappy countries.

Jaydoe SCLBlackbird, I understand why you make the comparison between Bush/Katrina and Obama/Haiti; however, emergency response nationally is an entirely different "animal" than international response.

SCLBlackbird Am I right in saying Haiti is Obama's Katrina, and that he's doing a better job responding to it?

Haiti is not part of the U.S. and is not Obama's responsibility.

Being a rich neighbor, we definitely have a moral obligation to provide help, like all the other rich countries around the world.

I think his knowledge of geography was limited, did he know that New Orleans was part of the U.S.?

Enoch100 I don't think this is Obama's Katrina.

What should he (we) do as a response?

This is a tough situation in a land that seems cursed...

All my life, I have never seen, parents sacrifice their children to the idols.

I am native of a voodooism family, if you want to know about the vodou there, contact me. And, before saying BS, it is necessary to go school to learn, or study also the statistics. Also, I think when God will curse evil nation, he will start from the greatest ones! less

Pamie I am sorry for some (many) of the crude comments here. Americans contributed much for Haiti and the majority of Americans do care.

FreeRadicals The confusion between Catholicism and Voodoo is solved with Santeria.

African voodoo was the practice, then came along the Christians, killing everyone not accepting Christianity and BINGO ( :-) - Santeria.

When too many people come to you with misinformation, you have to look at the source.

There are a lot of misinformation, half-truths and exaggerations about Haiti circulating around.

Haiti is a media darling because it does wonders for ratings and it's the easiest country to report from; you can practically make up any story you want and people will believe you. I noticed that when they actually bother interviewing Haitians, they often translate what is being said to serve their story.

There is also a lot of laziness that goes on in reporting on Haiti.

I remember there was a reporter who was sent on a five day assignment in Haiti to cover an important social issue, he spent a total of one hour on the assignment.

The rest of his time was spent at at the hotel and at the beach.

You also have to look at what is being circulated by aid groups, they often like to paint the most desperate picture imaginable to get people to donate.

The worst offenders are the Protestant missions.

I've gone to some of their websites, according to them 100% of Haitians practice voodoo and of course that's reason behind the lack of economic growth.

I believe the problem concerning "birth control" deals with education and unfortunately the people of Haiti have not had that available to them. They are very much believers in their Catholic religion and the Church has failed them along with their corrupt government.

Haiti is overpopulated today mainly because it started out as the second most populated country in the Americas.

The French were importing Africans by the boatload because the slave were dying at a faster rate than they were reproducing.

In the 1800s, when Haiti gained independence, the US population was roughly 5 million, while Haiti's was about 300,000. The US population increased some 60 fold, while Haiti's increased some 30 fold. Haiti's growth rate has been on a steady decline since the mid 80s according to the World Bank. The problem is that infrastructure growth has also been on a decline since the departure of Duvalier because of economic stagnancy.

Haitian women have on average 3.5 children, which is commendable considering the conditions they live in. However, you can always count on the media to feature the ones with inordinate numbers of children in their reports.

We over populate the world and we blame poverty.

My rule is if I can not take care of my own I simply don't have what will only become a burden.

It is selfish to have a child that will only starve to death.

Having children is not a have to. Thanks to religion and ignorance a child will starve today ...

FreeRadicals The sadder statistic is, their fertility rate has tripled since the quake.

Blame tent cities and younger people active.

So, I guess they're not just 'sitting' around waiting for help after-all.

I have yet to meet one in person.

Rarely does voodoo come up in Haitian conversations, yet voodoo seems to be an obsession with foreigners.

Women do not sell their children, they send them to live with a host family in the provinces and the capital because there aren't many schools in rural areas.

Mostly the host families are friends and relatives whom they trust.

If you want to go to primary school, you have to go to the provinces, if you want to go to secondary school you have to go to the capital.

More than half of my family members will tell you that if it weren't for an uncle or a godmother that took them in, they would have been illiterate.

The term restavek refers specifically to children that are abused by their host families, which is not the norm, but does happen.
