advertisementWASHINGTON, Dec 20, 2010 (AFP) - The United States said Monday it is closely monitoring the case of an American who has been held in Haiti on a charge of kidnapping.

US media reports say investigators are probing a Haitian man's complaint
that Paul Waggoner, a US relief worker, kidnapped his critically ill 15-month
old son from a hospital."Officials at the US embassy have visited Paul Waggoner on December 13 and 15," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters when asked about the case.

"They were at a preliminary hearing last week. They've been in
communication with his lawyer," he said."We've reached out to both the government of Haiti and MINUSTAH (the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti), and received assurances they will safeguard his well-being while he is incarcerated at the national penitentiary," he said.

"I'm not aware that we've heard any concerns about his well-being at this
point," Crowley said when asked if there were indications Waggoner had been
mistreated.

"He's been arrested on a kidnapping complaint.

And that complaint is still under investigation," Crowley said when asked to comment on the charges.

MSNBC said Waggoner's arrest apparently is based on the word of the child's
father, who refuses to believe that his 15-month-old son died and that his
remains were cremated.

Instead, he believes that Waggoner abducted the child.

"We are closely monitoring this case. It is being investigated.

And we'll
make sure that he has full rights as he goes through this," he said when asked to comment further on the charges.
