The Rooster,
Your great-great grandfather did what most immigrants did upon arrival on American soil: Ignore culture, food, clothes, language, or anything that reminded them of their former Country; This is normal currency for immigrants.
I have yet to meet an American who did not have a relative from the first Colonies.
You forgot to mention your great-great-great-great grandfather, the Native American Indian, most American has one in the family...
Did you know that both French and Haitian were discouraged in my parents household precisely for this reason when I came to America at age 10. All my cousins were born in America so I had no choice but to learn English.
We were not allowed to have neighborhood friends...
I don't see any difference between the French, Spanish,English and Portuguese settlers; They behave the same.
French and Africans created the birth of Haiti - minus the Indians.
Without one, the other would not have been in existence.
Too bad the symbiotic relationship weighed too heavily on the former servants.
But the latter had the last laughed...
Haiti is facing the very same problems most third world countries are facing except for possibly the environmental issues.
Us Haitians just have to grab the bull by the horns and make the best of it.
