OK all this is becoming seriously time consuming, but here's one final post on this subject.

Some people on this blog have been jumping all over themselves to defend the president.

Those of you who have been blogging with me for a while now know that for a very long time I was all about giving the man a chance to do his job. I even said that when he got the country it was in worst condition than any other time in modern Haitian history.

But now the waiting is over, and from what I can see he has done nothing that is quantifiable for his nation (nothing of substantial value).

However, maybe I'm wrong about the man. I was not expecting miracles from any leader who had to deal with the miserable condition the country was in. I just want to see one JUST ONE concrete thing that he has done. I know all of the obstacles that he faced, but show me ONE, JUST ONE obstacle that he actually did something about.

Every time a person mentions the failings of Haitian governments someone else screams that it's the fault of the international community.

The international community is doing the same thing to us that it did to many other Caribbean islands.

NONE OF THEM WERE REDUCED TO WHAT WE HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO. There's a reason for that--INTELLIGENT ELECTED OFFICIALS.

We as citizens will do what we can. My family and I have done a lot at the individual level.

BUT WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THE GOVERNMENT'S ACHIEVEMENTS.

Since I am a person of logic, if given the right evidence, I am completely able to change my mind on the issue.

So for those of you who keep jumping to the man's defense, here's your chance to change my mind. I am going to list the basic things that any national government needs to provide to its citizens.

I am listing only the basic national needs --so the man is not being graded on greatness, just common sense leadership stuff.

Those of you who wish to defend him and claim that he has done a good job during all those years that he has had to make a difference, all you will need to do is to demonstrate to me at least one thing JUST ONE that was visibly improved in the country.

And please don't say security because that is a result of foreign control.

Also, don't tell me how great a person he is. I don't care. All I care about is that he is the presiding leading official over a nation deeply in need of leadership.

Some of the greatest leaders in history have been drunks, womanizers, or total male whores, but a the governmental level they got things done. So please spare me the description of Pres. Preval's character.

Just show me the results of his leadership.

Anyway, here we go. Here's my list. When you finish reading it post yours.

Again, the list is of basic things a leader is expected to meet. BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO GIVE ME A LIST, JUT EVIDENCE OF ONE SERIOUS CHANGE THAT HE ACCOMPLISHED.

1. The Haitian people are still not able to FEED THEIR CHILDREN.

Two things are involved here; jobs and lower price on basic food stuff (inflation rate).

At least 80% of Haitians live below the poverty line "A quarter of our children suffer from chronic malnutrition."

2. Basic health care needs are none existent.

Less than 40% of the population has any real access to basic health care. National immunization rate is less than 34%.

Infant mortality rate in Haiti is 84 to every 1000 birth.

3. Haitians are still living and working in a filthy disgusting environment.

Basic trash collection issue is not resolved.

Acute respiratory infections and diarrheas cause half the infant deaths in the country.

4. 59% of the adult population is illiterate.

No literacy program has even been launched.

Of that 59% only about 39% go beyond rudimentary reading skills.

5. Complete lack of tourism.

This is connected to the PR issue that originally got me angry (see previous post).

6. Massive imports, relatively no exports that would benefit the national growth.

7. Basic electricity.

8. Basic Water needs.

I'll take a yes (with evidence) on any of these things.

But the constant excuses for our government's failure to provide at least ONE ANSWER TO ONE PROBLEM is not acceptable.

(Most of the information here can be found in the USAID report, the World fact book and Geographic.org).
