OK guys time out; no pun intended.
I believe you guys are doing the American thing of leaning too far in one direction or another. There's a big difference between child abuse and spanking a child on the rear for the sake of discipline.
Granted, I've raised my daughter without ever having to beat her.But I have been know to seriously shove her around now that she is this obnoxious teenager.
And when she was a preteen, I can distinctly remember times when I though that if she rudely answered her father one more time the man was going to kill her. Instead he shoved her around a bit yanked her by the ears a few times and extradited her to her room. On the other hand, my husband, who is not Haitian, and I have compared notes as to how many spankings we got individually.
I only had 2, and the truth is that I can't say that they really hurt all that much. My mother said that spanking me was never worth the effort because I screamed so loud at the slightest touch that she always though that everyone would think that she was killing me.My husband on the other hand said that in his country a beating with a belt was always a young man's punishment.
He remembers that the beatings were always around his legs and buttocks and were never harmful enough for him no to go play within the next hour if he wanted to. Again it is all about degrees.
We don't hit our daughter simply because we think she would actually enjoy making us feel guilty about that type of punishment.
We're just smarter than she is that's all. Anyway, spankings like the ones mentioned here are harmless and have been in practice since the beginning of man's trek to socialization.
It was and is still practiced in most of Europe, Asia, and Africa.
On the other hand, let's not confuse that with child abuse.
This is where a child is so severely beaten as to physically scar them physically and mentally.
Let's not confuse a few belts to the legs with a child that's been pulverized with some adults fist. Let's not confuse a worn out belt with a riguaze which is specially made to cut through the skin and yes was made to create the most excruciating pain on the slave's back. Let's not confuse people who sodomize their children, lock them up in closets, verbally abuse them and all sorts of other horrors, with strong (if archaic) type of disciplines.
Lets not be as stupid as most Americans who always want to throw the baby out with the bath water.
By the way, I consider the treatments of children who are restavecs in Haiti as being child abuse, criminal, and perverted.
And that goes for the way most Haitians treat these children.
